Chapter 13

The waves crashed against the shore, reverberating through their bodies as Mia Thompson and Inspector James Ramirez found themselves in a secluded spot on the Caribbean Island. The sand was soft beneath their feet, and the palm trees swayed gently overhead, providing much-needed shade from the scorching sun. It was an idyllic setting, but even here, Mia couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. She glanced around nervously every few seconds, her auburn hair tickling her neck as she scanned the horizon. Her heart raced at the thought of Lucas "The Boss" Devereaux's men finding them here, but she knew the risk was worth it for some peace and solitude.

Her rescuer - Inspector Ramirez - seemed lost in thought, his expression guarded as he stared out at the sea. His presence was reassuring, yet something about him made her uneasy. As if he held secrets that he wasn't willing to share. She couldn't help but wonder what had brought this dedicated law enforcement officer to this place, so far from home. Her own curiosity bubbled up, and she decided to gently nudge him into talking. "You seem deep in thought, Inspector," she said softly, breaking the silence. "Is everything alright?"

He turned to look at her, his short black hair shifting ever so slightly in the breeze and offered her a small smile. "Just trying to figure out our next move, Miss Thompson." His voice was smooth and calm, but there was an undercurrent of tension she couldn't ignore. She noticed he avoided calling her Mia, using her last name instead. Maybe it was just his professional demeanor kicking in. Or maybe there was more to it.

She took a deep breath of the salty air, relishing the taste of freedom on her tongue. Despite the danger that lurked around them, she felt alive for the first time in months. "I wish I could say I'm not used to this kind of excitement," she quipped with a self-deprecating chuckle, gesturing to their surroundings. "But I've had more than my fair share recently."

He chuckled in response, the corners of his mouth turning up slightly. His eyes darted towards her left shoulder where a bandage still held place from her recent escape attempt. "You're lucky to be here, Miss Thompson," he said gruffly. "He rarely shows mercy." His voice dropped, and he leaned forward slightly, lowering his voice. "Devereaux is ruthless. He will stop at nothing to achieve his goals."

Mia shivered at the mention of "The Boss." She knew all too well how dangerous he could be. She nodded in agreement, her striking green eyes meeting his. "I've seen it firsthand," she admitted quietly. "But why did he target me?" It was a question that continued to haunt her every waking moment.

Inspector Ramirez sighed heavily, running a hand through his thinning hair. "You're an innocent by stander swept up in his web, Mia. You're valuable only because you're alive."

Mia turned to look out at the ocean again, her heart pounding in her chest.
